New Realities for Developing your Speaking Business

Over the last 4 years, the world of professional speaking in Canada has been knocked off its traditional axis. For keynotes, meeting planners are increasingly opting for pseudo-celebrities. And for training, companies are getting the information for free off the Internet. That means it's more challenging than ever for non-celebrity speakers to develop their businesses. The good news is that by making a few adjustments, the speaking business is also potentially more lucrative than ever.

2012 marks Jeff Mowatt's 20th year as a full time professional speaker. He's the first to admit that he's often learned - the hard way - what does and doesn't work to continue to develop your business. Jeff is a CSP and was one of the "founding four" Presidents of CAPS national. He has spoken for numerous national and chapter conferences for CAPS and NSA. Rest assured, these tips and strategies are insights that you've never heard before, because they are based on realities of today's marketplace. Jeff will cover:

  • How being 'well-read' can translate into 'seldom booked'
  • Niche marking in Canada… why those who need you the most, book you the least
  • Great openings: from dramatic (aka toastmaster corny) to compelling
  • How reading your audience can ruin your impact
  • Why 'Experts who Speak' get the LOWEST fees
  • Why speakers who are 'impressive' and 'polished' are seldom rebooked
  • 3 reasons to say 'no' to working with bureaus
  • The myth of press releases and media exposure
  • Why budgets don't work… 3 keys to becoming a millionaire in the speaking business (yes, he is one).

Setting your Speaking Fees

The right price for your message and your market

When it comes to pricing, the speaking business can be confusing and counter-intuitive. Often the less content you provide - the higher the fee you can charge. The higher your fee, often the less you'll make at month end. Setting a fee that's too low not only makes you less money, it also reduces your perceived value to clients and may decrease your bookings.

In this session, 20 year fulltime speaker, Jeff Mowatt CSP will take the mystery out of setting speaking fees to maximize your economic returns. This will be a hands-on session where you'll start with a suggested base fee. Then Jeff will walk you through the variables that affect the market-value of your message and you as a speaker. At the end of this workshop, you'll know how to position your pricing - not only as you start your speaking career; but also as you develop your client base. As you launch your speaking career this is one workshop you (literally) can't afford to miss.SpeakAnout the Speaker:

Jeff Mowatt speaks on the topic of customer service under his trademarked brand, "Influence with Ease." His customer service column has been featured in over 200 business publications. He is the author the bestselling books, Becoming a Service Icon in 90 Minutes a Month and Influence with Ease as well as several training resources. The year 2012 marks Jeff's 20th year as a full time professional speaker. He is a CSP, was the Founding President of the CAPS Calgary Chapter, and is one of the "Founding Four" national presidents of CAPS national.
